Crabbing..... There is a crab dock in Winchester Bay just south of Reedsport. I imagine you will be driving through there on your way to the camp ground. They have crab pots for rent. There may be a crab dock in Florence as well.

Yep, if you go crabbing at Winchester you will be right by the Oyster company
There is a crab dock before you cross the bridge into Florence at the South Jetty, but it's usually really busy.
But, I have just heard that Alsea Bay at Waldport is suppose to have the best crabbing in the state, and has a new crabbing float. I like Waldport, I haven't crabbed for years but we use to take the boat out there, it's a nice town. I have a crab net in the valley with other stored camp gear, I will see if I can dig it up. I don't have a shell fish license but you can use it MountainMan.
For Dungeness Crab: 3 rings only per person 5-3/4" minimum size limit Males only 12 crab per person per day catch limit

It's exciting to see so many people starting to post and planning to come!
I am getting very excited. Can't wait to hear the answer on the crab. yum yum. I love crab! don't know much about crab season though. I know there are some months that they are soft shelled and not good to eat.
I don't know what to do as far as bringing food. Have we figured out yet if we are going to play it by ear and make a run to the store, or if we should bring certain things? I am definitely open for suggestions if you want me to bring something to share with the group.

has anybody been reading the michigan thread in the main "get togethers" forum? those folks know how to have a good time.
the past get togethers i've been too, we've planned meals and shared cooking and cleaning. some of the best conversations take place when preparing food together.
i was planning on bringing a large tarp to shelter some of the campsite, in case of "coastal weather."
firewood? who's bring that?

I am wondering...the gatherings that you have been to, were they a one day thing or a weekend campout like this one? Yes, I do think that we will do at least one meal together, but (IF you have read the forum threads...Events thread and Forum thread) you know that most of feeding you is on you.
That's not to say that some of us might decide to do a spur of the moment pooling what we have to do a breakfast or something like that, I just don't want anyone showing up without food and depending on the others to feed them... when that sort of thing happens people get soured on get togethers like this.
Also, as mentioned in this thread MountainMan is going to bring wood.. but if you wish to bring some, we can never have enough..though Stonefield beach is very close and usually has lots of drift wood on it.
And, I am thinking that it is only Fair that perhaps those wanting to eat a lot of crab offer to help catch them...and that way you might learn how to catch them too
My suggestion, if you are wondering what to bring for a group meal, is if you have a dish that is a specialty of yours...bring that. Or I am bringing Shishkabob sticks, meat or any kind of veggies are good for them...sooo if you have a garden and lots of vegetables. I plan on bringing boneless chicken, terriyaki sauce and balsamic vinegar...and new potatos. Also, for the grilled pizza (because I see no reason that we can't make both) sauce, cheese and assorted toppings will be needed...I like smoked oysters so I'm going to bring some of those...I have 10 lbs of flour so that's taken care of.

hmmm let's see palm springs was 4 days at a member's house, at tahoe we rented a 5 bedroom cabin for 4 nights, vegas was 5 days, we had 6- 2 bedroom condos furnished by a member.
we planned meals for everyone, not just some, we planned different activities and included those that wanted to participate.
we are a group of "friends' who got to know one another in the forums. we celebrated that friendship in our actual meetings.
i wanted to come to this get together to meet some "friends." i was reluctant to include myself because of the lack of "conversation" in this thread. i emailed you about communication between people and you failed to answer my questions. i can't see any sense of community or freindship viasable with what's been written here. i do think you are doing a good job of getting this together and responding to everyone.
i can and do camp by myself most of the time. i am going to skip this opportunity to do so again.
thanks, but no thanks, ken

Well Keeno, if that is how you feel then it's best you do just as you are...sorry that you can't see we are trying to work towards a group that can do the types of get togethers you described. BUT, it does sound like there was a whole lot more history involved in that group, then we have here with this one. Good things take time...as one of the people who went out of their way to try to make this happen I FEEL that it is my duty to make sure that things are as even as possible...
The Michigan group has been having problems, and have joined their campout with Indiana, In Indiana...that is usually what happens when one person, or two take on the bulk of the work...Because they were paying someone to plan all their meals and do all of the shopping and such things might have seemed easier than what we have going here.
You know, as the saying goes...you just can't please everyone...especially when they don't read the history of the gathering...But, then, That's just My opinion.

Oh, and Keeno...You sent that message on my Birthday...IF you had read the Forum you would have known that. I do have a life and this is not my job. Again, IF you had read the Forum you would have known that I am not the Only person involved in this campout and that there are others who could have answered your quesstions.
Well, My Mouse and I are going traveling...So, I do hope that there aren't any hands that will need holding while we are gone. Redwicket.

Redwicket ~ I think you are doing a fine job. And a Happy Belated Birthday to you...I could sing. That would be good, considering how off key I am, you'd never actually hear me!
I'm out. On the campout. I really kind of sad about this. I was looking forward to camping in that area, with adults.
I am in the middle of a budding business. How I want it to bloom is another thing entirely. But I just got two cake orders for that weekend. I'm not in the position in my life to turn down business, so I cannot make it. I'm happy for the orders and truly bummed about not going on this campout.
I do hope that I am able to come back here and read how much fun you all had. It sounds wonderful. Maybe another time for me..........

Aaahhh, Now I really am sad! I really want to have the chance some day in the near future to meet you... Does your business slow down in the Fall? I am seriously thinking about doing a women's only campout/gathering at my home by the river...it is also just 16 miles or so to Florence, so the beach isn't far.
Also, I am going to let Jim take the lead for the time that is left until the campout...Sooo, please direct all of you questions to him. I haven't been feeling quite up to par and I want to be in fine mettle by the campout.
Frolicking, I want you to know that I consider the lost of your presence at the campout to be a real loss on our part. But, never fear there will be other chances, and perhaps closer to home for you. Take care Redwicket

Well it looks like I'll be coming to the camp out alone. My g/f, and I, have parted, and going our own way. This all makes me very sad ...But i'll try my best to put on a happy face, and attend.

Say I know about the winchester bay crabbing sites. Just never did it. I'm going to bring as much wood as I can fit in my boat and truck. I may be getting one of those cabin tents. I'm still looking forward to this get together. I have two good crab rings. I have a pot for boiling the crab. Big stainless steel. Yes I agree redwicket that we should plan on just keeping things simple. Were doing this to just meet new friends and have some fun. In the past I've learned that I can overplan.. I say just go with the flow. I think once we meet eachother in person that things should come together pretty easy. I go camping to relax and enjoy nature and this is an oppertunity for me to camp not alone. Oh and Happy Birthday Red. I will probably even sleep in once in a while while I'm there. I'm going to ask BLM and the Forest service where there are good camp fire wood cutting areas. Yep bringing the saw. What I have now is mostly scrap lumber. I'm not a great cook but I plan to catch some trout and If others have fishing licenses the more fish we can catch for us all. I'm going to double check the limits because the lakes are some times different. I think it is 5 per day like you see on the stringer and 10 in possesion. If we can get another fishing pole out there trolling it would be a little better I think. I'm just going to do my thing and respect others for what ever they want to do or not do. That way the coast is clear over on the coast lol. To be honest being a vet living alone now this get together will be very healthy for me. I have a very open mind, I think any way. Looking forward to it. Take care all

Look for banners that have both Matchdoctor.com and PlentyofFish.com on either end with Oregon Singles Campout above and in the middle, can't miss it!
It's a beautiful night in the coastal range tonight, Great Big Full Moon!!! I know that it's going to be a beautiful weekend for the campout too!

Don't worry about drop-outs, some didn't want to but had no choice...I have the feeling that there will be a lot that are going to show that aren't RSVPd. And remember, there is another site involved too.
Yep, got out my tripod so that I can take pics with me in them too! Is there a place to post them here???
Who knows Lovinheart, maybe the campout will change your whole perspective... Stranger things have happened...

FYI,,on the crabbing,, This is the off season.. The females stay around the rocks and piers, while the males move out to Deep water.. So unless you have a Boat and go out to where you see the others crabbing,, There is very little chance of catch enough legal crab to even feed one person,,,,,, BUT ... sitting out there all day chasing badys crab around can be a lot of fun..you will catch piles of crab,, just no legal ones ...
